This scenic area is renowned for its limestone karst formations, amongst which farmers have set-up their homes and crops. You will be driven to a local river in the area for a scenic canoe ride to a small village. Disembarking at the village you will enjoy a short hike to the isolated hamlet of Berua. Berua is famous for its small collection of houses in a picturesque setting amongst the rice fields and karsts. Depending upon your speed and stops, the trek will take approx. 45 minutes. Walking around the hamlet you will visit a local home for some refreshments and snacks before you enjoy a canoe ride back to the village where you can sit back and relax as you are paddled through luscious vegetation. Before returning to your hotel in Makassar you will visit the Paotere traditional harbour where the famous wooden Bugis schooners, “Phinisis”, come to unload and load their cargo. Continues with a visit to Fort Rotterdam, a well preserved Dutch fortress from the 17th Century. The fort was built upon the ruins of an existing fort called Jum Pandan which gave the city its name at that time, Ujung Pandang. Today this name is still used by locals instead of Makassar. Inside the fort you will visit the Sulawesi section of the Lagaligo Museum which has artefacts and displays on the history and culture of Sulawesi. With its picturesque location amongst rice fields and distant limestone karts, this is a great place to get an insight into the use of cliffs for Torajan burials and see the traditional Tau Taus - wooden effigies of the deceased which are dressed and placed next to the tomb. Due to the expense of the Tau Taus these tend to be used for members of the upper-class. This burial site is still used today and at times it is possible to see groups of locals creating new tombs on the cliff. It can take months for a new tomb to be chiselled out of the rock. A trail continues past the main cliff face where you can see additional graves. Continue to discover the secrets of baby trees in Kambira. Onwards to Londa with its ancient tombs in which the deceased was not buried, but placed among the rocks. Lunch in a local restaurant in Rantepao. Onwards to Kete Kesu with a stop in Karuaya to enjoy the beautiful and typical Toraja panorama, from here we will continue with a short walk to Kete Kesu, one of the oldest Toraja villages. Here you still find two rows of the original village houses, the traditional ancestral houses of the Toraja people, Tongkonan, as well as traditional rice barns with colorful woodcarvings. Before returning to the hotel you will have the opportunity to enjoy some refreshments under one of the houses at Ke'te Kesu. If he is available, we will arrange for the local Christian priest to join you for these refreshments to give you an insight into how the Christian religion handles the ancient animist believes of the Torajans who also consider themselves to be Christians.
